Men’s Masters to descend on Gold Coast for 2022 Championships

Published Tue 06 Sep 2022

The Hockey Australia Men’s Masters Championships will make its long-awaited return and celebrate its 40th edition with a massive 15-day event at the Gold Coast Hockey Centre from 24 September – 8 October 2022.

The Men’s Masters Championships is the largest participation event on the Hockey Australia national calendar but has not been held since 2019 due to COVID.

This year’s event will consist of 80 teams and see approximately 1,800 participants (players, coaches, support staff and officials) take part with a total of 300 matches played.

Supported by the Queensland Government via Tourism Events Queensland (TEQ) and Major Events Gold Coast (MEGC), the 2022 Hockey Australia Men’s Masters Championships will be the largest participation event staged at the venue that hosted the 2018 Commonwealth Games hockey tournament.

Hockey Australia CEO David Pryles expressed his appreciation to the Queensland Government and MEGC for their support and enthusiasm in holding the event.

“We thank the Queensland Government, MEGC and hockey associations for partnering and working together to bring the Men’s Masters to the Gold Coast,” said Pryles.

“Masters hockey is one of the largest participation groups in the Australian hockey community and there is no doubt players across the country will be chomping at the bit to be back representing their home state or territory on the national stage after a two year absence.”

“In addition to the action happening on the pitch, I am sure competitors will have a magnificent time enjoying everything else the Gold Coast and surrounding region has to offer to make it a memorable experience.”

Tourism and Sport Minister Stirling Hinchliffe said Queensland was Australia’s home of world-class sporting events.

“Hockey Australia’s Men’s Masters Championships on the Gold Coast are a great example of sport benefiting from infrastructure legacy,” Mr Hinchliffe said.

“The Gold Coast Hockey Centre was upgraded for the GC 2018 Commonwealth Games and continues to provide a first-rate venue for community and major events.

“Events like the Masters Championships bring competitors and spectators who contribute millions of dollars to Gold Coast businesses.

“From Gold Coast accommodation and transport providers to hotels, restaurants and tourism operators, the benefits of the Masters Championships will be felt across the visitor economy.

“And we’ll continue to attract terrific sporting events to the Gold Coast as an early legacy of our green and gold runway to the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games.”

Gold Coast Mayor Tom Tate said: “If life begins at 40, it’s fantastic to be welcoming the Australia Men’s Masters Championships to our city for its 40th edition.”

“I expect the banter at the after-match barbecues will be just as colourful as the on-pitch action. It’s this camaraderie and spirit of play that makes these masters tournaments such fantastic events. Congratulations to Hockey Australia and Major Events Gold Coast for making it happen.”
