Men’s Masters Championships makes waves on the Gold Coast
Published Mon 17 Oct 2022
After a two year COVID forced hiatus, the Hockey Australia Men’s Masters Championships was back in a big way following the conclusion of the long awaited 2022 edition on the Gold Coast.
Hockey Australia’s most populated national event saw an amazing 80 teams take part across eleven age categories, with approximately 1,800 participants (players, coaches, support staff and officials) involved in a total of 300 matches over the fortnight of competition.
The winners were evenly spread across the tournament with New South Wales (34+, 40+, 50+/2) and Victoria (45+/1, 55+/1, 75+) each winning gold medals in three age categories.
Queensland’s teams enjoyed a strong home tournament winning five of the age categories (45+/2, 50+/1, 55+/2, 65+/2, 70+) , while Western Australia secured the 40+/2, 60+/1 and 65+/1 divisions. Tasmania also took home a gold medal, winning the 60+/2 division.
As per every Masters Championships, the matches were played in highly competitive spirit coupled with great sportsmanship and respect among opposition teams and players alike.
One incident of note during the championships was when a ‘lucky life saving mission’ occurred when David Tonkin (captain of one of the WA teams) collapsed on the pitch without any vital signs.
Tournament medic Paul Hardie, who was in the technical bench in proximity when the incident occurred, assessed Tonkin, called for and administered the defibrillator and took control of the care of the player at the scene.
On hand to assist Hardie were Dr David Mountain and former Hockey WA President Michael Henderson who were playing on the same WA team.
Upon ensuring Tonkin had a pulse and was breathing, Hardie continued to monitor and stabilise him until the Queensland Ambulance Service arrived. A close call that thankfully had a happy and positive ending.
The 2022 Hockey Australia Men’s Masters Championships was supported by the Queensland Government through Tourism and Events Queensland (TEQ), and Destination Gold Coast.
Next year’s Men’s Masters Championships are scheduled to take place in Perth in late September 2023.
