2023 Australian Indoor Championships come to a close
Published Fri 27 Jan 2023
The curtain has come down on the 2023 Hockey Australia Indoor Championships in Brisbane following a successful 23 days of competition across five age categories.
Held at the Brisbane Bicentenary Sports & Entertainment Complex, the event was the first time the National Indoor Championships have been held since January 2020 due to COVID.
The 2023 Hockey Australia Indoor Championships were proudly supported by the Queensland Government and Brisbane City Council.
Every match of the tournament was livestreamed on LIVEHockey.
The Women’s and Men’s Open Divisions kicked off proceedings, where WA and NSW State won the respective gold medals.
Open Women
NSW State went through the Pool Stage undefeated, while Queensland finished in second place. However, in the semi finals it was the third placed Western Australia and fourth placed Victoria that would progress to the Final, where two goals in as many minutes from Emma Reid and Amberley Abbott secured WA a 2-0 win.
Open Men
The Open Men’s competition saw a repeat of 2020, with NSW State defeating ACT in the Final. The tournament was hotly contested, with the semi finals and both medal matches all tight and close encounters.
With both teams featuring players from the Hockey One League, it was a double from Heath Ogilvie that ultimately decided the gold medal match as NSW State held on for a 3-1 win after Garry Bakhus had opened the scoring for the ACT. Meanwhile, two quick goals from Jake Sherren and Joel Carroll saw Victoria hold off NSW Blues 3-2 for bronze.
U21 Women
NSW State and Victoria, the two standout teams in the competition, produced a thrilling gold medal match that would be decided by a shootout after the teams finished 3-3 at full time.
NSW State captain Brooke Welsh gave her team a dream start in the 1st minute before a Jamie Zimmerman goal two minutes from the end, to seal her hat-trick, drew the Victorians level at 3-3. Victoria went on to win the shootout 3-2.
A goal from Portia Miller in the shadows of three quarter time would prove the winner for WA in the bronze medal match. Despite Queensland having a handful of penalty corners in the last quarter, WA withstood the pressure to hold on.
U21 Men
Both ACT and WA prevailed in shootouts over Queensland and NSW State (who went through the Pool stage undefeated) respectively in nail biting semi finals to reach the decider. Thomas Keating opened the scoring for WA in the 5th minute of the Final but from there it was all the ACT as Fin Hegyi scored a double and Mathew Young and Zac McGregor also found the back of the net to seal a 4-1 win.
In a remarkable bronze medal match, four goals from Bradley Smith had NSW State 4-0 up after 21 minutes before WA stormed back into the contest in the second half. WA’s Riley Stevens scored his second in the final minute to make it 4-3 but time would ultimately beat them as NSW State triumphed.
U18 Women
With the competition comprising two pools of four teams, QLD Maroon and NSW State (who both finished top of their pools) reached the gold medal match, while Victoria took on NSW Blues in the battle for bronze.
NSW State went 2-0 up inside four minutes but a stunning hat-trick from Alexandria Risetto pulled QLD Maroon back and forced the game to a shootout as it finished 3-3 after 40 minutes. QLD Maroon goalkeeper Chloe Daly proved the hero in the shootout, denying two NSW State attempts to see the home state lift the trophy.
Three second half goals saw Victoria win the bronze medal as they defeated NSW Blues 3-1.
U18 Men
Both NSW teams (State and Blues) went through the pool stage undefeated, however the medal matches would see NSW State take on Western Australia for gold while Victoria and the ACT battled it out for bronze.
NSW State won a highly entertaining Final 5-3 as Victoria beat ACT 6-3 in matches that produced high quality finishing.
U13 Girls
The U13 competitions consist of all pool matches, with the focus primarily on participation and player development. The Girls tournament featured seven teams, with both Queensland sides (Fire and Flare) finishing atop the final standings.
U13 Boys
Similarly to the U13 Girls, both Queensland teams headed the U13 Boys standings. Eight teams were divided into two pools of four, with the top two teams from both moving into Pool C. This pool determined the final 1-4 placings. The other four teams went into Pool D to play off for positions 5-8.
U15 Girls
Eventual winners Queensland Maroon scored a staggering 42 goals without conceding in the pool stage, while Queensland Gold finished narrowly ahead of NSW State in Pool B.
After defeating NSW State 7-1 in the semi finals, Queensland Maroon proved too strong for Victoria in the Final in a 4-0 result.
NSW State rebounded from their semi final defeat to record a 4-1 victory in the bronze medal match against Queensland Gold.
U15 Boys
The two standout teams in the U15 Boys competition, Queensland Maroon and NSW State, turned on a 10-goal thriller in the Final. After NSW State led 2-1 at half time, Queensland edged ahead 3-2 with a quarter to play. Harley Woodall’s hat-trick triggered a further two goals for the home state to seal the win, NSW State captain Henry Jones netting his hat-trick in the final minute in a gallant performance.
The bronze medal match was just as enthralling as Victoria and NSW Blues could not be separated after scores were locked 4-4 at full time. NSW Blues held their nerve when it counted, winning the deciding shootout 2-0.
