Steph emerged in the National Senior Women’s Squad in 2015 showcasing a mix of skill and power but had her 2016 Rio Olympics dream dashed after suffering anterior cruciate ligament injury during a training session. After recovering from that injury, Steph went on earn Player of the Tournament at the 2017 Australian Hockey League and runner-up for the 2017 Hockeyroos Player of the Year. In 2019, Steph underwent a second knee reconstruction which ruled her out of all of 2019. She returned to make the Olympic team for the Tokyo Olympics, which were delayed until 2021 and she has continued as a star player in the Hockeyroos line up. Steph scored both goals in the Hockeyroos’ come from behind win over Germany in the bronze medal match of the 2022 World Cup. Steph’s eyeing her second Olympics in Paris in 2024 and cites Olympic gold medallist Cathy Freeman as her Olympic inspiration, after witnessing her win gold in Sydney 2000. |
