Jake started playing hockey at the age of four, following in the footsteps of his parents in joining local club Eastern Suburbs Tigers in Brisbane. He credits 1976 Olympic silver medal winner Greg Browning as one of those to have had the strongest influence on his career, while cricketer Andrew Symonds was also a childhood hero.

Jake was shortlisted for the FIH Player of the Year in 2018.
