Dubbed the “Mayor of Hobart”, Eddie is one of Tasmania’s most celebrated sportsmen, having enjoyed one of the longest hockey careers Australia’s ever seen. He became the first hockey player to play 400 internationals and is set to attend his fifth Olympic Games – a record for the sport. He surpassed Jamie Dwyer’s record of 365 matches in March 2020. His longevity is remarkable due to a career that has been largely injury free. Aside from being a three-time Olympic medallist with one silver and two bronze, Eddie was one of the Australian flagbearers for the Opening Ceremony of the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games. Eddie started his Kookaburras career as a striker before moving into the midfield and now he is an integral part of the team’s defensive unit. He’s been nominated as (finalist) for the FIH Player of the Year on more than one occasion. Outside of hockey, Eddie loves spending time back in his home state of Tasmania, traveling in the wilderness, walking upstream and fly-fishing and tuna fishing during season. He Started playing hockey after following in the footsteps of his mother who played for North-West Graduates Hockey Club. Together with his partner Lou, they have three sons.

WHAT HIS TEAMMATES SAY… “He’s a silky mover with and without the ball. Eddie Ockenden…he’s one hell of a player. He’s always thinking about game, thinking about how he can get better.” Jeremy Hayward
