WA prove dominant force at home 2023 Masters Championships

After 15 days of action across six locations in Perth and Joondalup, here’s a recap of the results from the 2023 Hockey Australia Men’s Masters Championships.

Western Australia had an event to remember, the home state making it to every gold medal match. WA won seven gold medals in the 34+, 45+/2, 50+/1, 50+/2, 60+/1, 65+/2 and 75+ age groups. Queensland and New South Wales also shared success, claiming three age division gold medals apiece.

The Men’s Masters Championships continues to go from strength to strength this year’s edition featuring 88 teams across 15 competitions, bettering the 80 that took part in 2022.

This year also saw the 80+ age group introduced with Victoria beating Western Australia 4-3 in a shootout to claim the inaugural title.

The true spirit of masters was exemplified in the 65+/2 division where New South Wales was struck down with covid leaving them unable to compete in the Bronze Medal match. South Australia showed their class and sportsmanship as they agreed that in the absence of the match, both teams share the bronze medal.

The 2023 Hockey Australia Masters Championships was proudly supported by the Western Australian Government through Tourism Western Australia, together with the City of Joondalup.
