Hockey Australia is saddened to learn former Kookaburra Laurie Bedford has passed away at the age of 81.
Laurie was the 194th player capped for Australia’s Men’s Hockey Team, one of 13 players to make their international debut on 13 August 1967 in the first match of a 3-test series in New Zealand.
A legend of Cricketers Hockey Club in Perth, Laurie started playing at the club in in 1960, firstly at left wing and then at fullback. He was also a talented penalty corner taker.
Laurie enjoyed great success at Cricketers HC during his 13 years at the club. Over that period, he represented Western Australia at Colts (U18 level) and Seniors before being selected for Australia.
After competing in the 1967 Trans-Tasman series, according to Hockey Australis records Laurie also played in an international tournament in Lahore against East Germany, France and Kenya in 1969.
Hockey Australia extends its condolences to Laurie’s wife Patsy and his family at this time.
