Update on various 2021 Australian Hockey Championships

Published Tue 17 Aug 2021

Considering the ongoing COVID-19 situation across parts of the country, Hockey Australia has provided an update on its upcoming national hockey events.

Further to the cancellation of this year’s Australian Mega-Masters Championships which was scheduled to be held in Newcastle and surrounds, the following updates have been made.

2021 Australian Under 13 Carnival

  • Postponed to 11-17 November (originally scheduled 30 September - 7 October).
  • This decision has been made to give all participants the best chance of attending and participating safely after the completion of local hockey seasons.
  • The postponement is supported by event partner Events Tasmania.

2021 Australian Under 21 Championships

  • Postponed to 2-9 February 2022.
  • The intention is to hold the event in Sydney as was originally planned for 2021.
  • The event is for athletes that were eligible in 2021.
  • The 2022 Australian Under 21 Championships are scheduled to be held in July 2022.

2021 Australian Country Championships

  • Planning continues for the event to go ahead from 16-23 October in Cairns.
  • Hockey Australia will continue to monitor the situation and engage with participating teams.

“In collaboration with our State and Territory Member Associations, we have reviewed our outstanding 2021 championships due to the constantly evolving COVID landscape,” said HA GM Commercial, Communications and Events, Tim Cherry.

“The rapid and unpredictable nature of regions going into lockdown and closing their borders makes forward planning and organising for national events near impossible.

“We have also had to take into consideration the timing of community hockey, so these are the best and most sensible scenarios at this time.

“We know how quickly things can change so we will continue to monitor the situations and border restrictions of each state and territory.”

Further updates will be announced in due course.
