Tim Strapp to lead the Jillaroos to the 2025 Junior World Cup

Published Mon 24 Mar 2025

Jillaroos’ Assistant Coach, Tim Strapp, has today been announced to step up as the Head Coach of the team and will lead the side to the Junior World Cup in Santiago, Chile, this December.

Strapp takes the helm of the women’s Under 21 national side, having already spent four years with the team. He boasts an extensive coaching career as the Tasmanian Institute of Sport’s Head Hockey Coach and recently co-led the Tasmanian Tigers women’s hockey team through a rebuild, which saw them successfully make the finals in last year’s Hockey One League.

Strapp will continue to build on the legacy of former Head Coach Stacia Strain for the next nine months in the lead-up to the Junior World Cup.

“I’m thrilled and honoured to lead the Jillaroos through to the Junior World Cup,” Strapp said.

“Stacia has done a fantastic job of building the program and having us in the position we’re in now. She’s developed a strong, athlete-centred program where our number one goal is to produce Hockeyroos and then very closely behind that is to be successful in December.

“We’ve worked really hard to create an environment where we want to encourage young female athletes to support each other and bring each other up and not have to step on each other for future success… and I believe we’re in a great position to build strongly on our last Junior World Cup performance of fifth.”

Following a strong Junior World Cup Qualifier showing against New Zealand in January, the Jillaroos will play three practice matches in Belgium before playing in a four nations tournament in Berlin to prepare for the Cup.

“We’ll be playing a ‘tournament-style’ series in Berlin, which is invaluable for the Jillaroos. We don’t often get that kind of experience, it will be really valuable.”

“Our number one goal is to go to Chile and win and I believe we’re in a great position to do that.”

The Jillaroos are a key part of Australia’s hockey pathway as one of the final stepping stones to the national women’s Hockeyroos team. Experiences on the international stage at events like the Junior World Cup are a key component of developing the next generation of national heroes.
