A feast of world class hockey is coming to Australia next month with the Hockeyroos and Kookaburras to feature in FIH Pro League ‘mini tournaments’ in Sydney and Hobart.

The Hockeyroos will be joined by Germany and China, who are currently coached by former Hockeyroo Alyson Annan, for a six-match series at the Sydney Olympic Park Hockey Centre from 10-15 February.

This will be followed by six double header match days from 28 February - 5 March at the Tasmanian Hockey Centre in Hobart comprising men’s and women’s internationals.

The Hobart mini tournament will see the world number one ranked Kookaburras up against Argentina and Spain, with the Hockeyroos (ranked third) taking on Argentina and the USA.

It will be the first time the Hockeyroos and Kookaburras have played in Tasmania since February 2019 in the inaugural edition of the FIH Pro League.

Sydney last hosted international hockey matches in February 2020, when the Hockeyroos and Kookaburras took on Belgium and Great Britain.

The Hockeyroos have not played an international since winning silver at the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games.

“We are really excited to firstly be back playing international hockey again after a long break, but even more so to be able to play in Australia as the last time the Hockeyroos played on home soil was in June 2021,” said Hockeyroos Coach Katrina Powell.

“Last year we made some significant progress in where we want to get to as a team and our way of playing, so having eight matches against high quality opposition is a great opportunity to continue improving.”

“The Pro League comprises many of the world’s best teams so playing in front of home crowds will be a fantastic way to launch into 2023. We look forward to having big crowds and parochial support to cheer on the athletes when we play in Sydney and Hobart.”

For the Kookaburras, the Pro League matches in Hobart follow the FIH Men’s World Cup 2023 which starts on 13 January in India.

“While our immediate focus is on success at the World Cup, we are pleased to be back in the Pro League and have more matches on home soil to look forward to,” said Kookaburras Coach Colin Batch.

“There was an excellent turnout the last time we played in Tasmania. There is always really strong support whenever Australian teams play there and I’m sure the Tasmanian sporting public will turn out in strong numbers again for what will be hard fought and exciting matches against two top ten teams.”

The FIH Pro League is broadcast in Australia on FOX Sports, available on Foxtel and Kayo.
