Queensland go back-to-back as Women’s Masters returns

Published Thu 06 Oct 2022

Masters Hockey in Australia is alive and well. After a 2-year hiatus, the Australian Women’s Masters Championships has made a successful return with 11 memorable days of competition in Cairns.

In an action-packed final day at the Cairns Hockey Centre in Far North Queensland, the home state claimed five of the gold medals on offer.

Queensland won the 34+, 40+, 50+, 55+ and 60+ age categories, while NSW took out the 45+ and both 65+ competitions.

The quality and competitiveness of the hockey played was one thing, however the most significant aspect of the Championships was undoubtedly the amazing 42 teams who attended across seven age groups (up from 39 teams that took part in the last event pre-COVID in 2019).

“It was wonderful to see the enthusiasm and friendships that exist across teams and generations. I came away truly inspired,” said Hockey Australia Board Director Colin Murphy, who attended the tournament.

“A special acknowledgement and thank you to the talented organising committees and tournament officials…it was great to see how organised and prepared everyone was.”

The 2022 Hockey Australia Women’s Masters Championships was supported by the Queensland Government, through Tourism and Events Queensland (TEQ), and Cairns Regional Council.
