McLeish puts stick down after fourth Indoor World Cup

One of Australia’s longest serving indoor players has called time on her international career, with Emma McLeish announcing her retirement after competing at a remarkable four FIH Indoor Hockey World Cups.

The 35-year-old from Albion Park in New South Wales made the decision to retire from international indoor hockey as a player after the final match of the Australian Women Team’s 2023 Indoor World Cup campaign in South Africa.

“This decision was not easy as being part of a playing group and surrounded by likeminded athletes is an environment I love being part of,” said McLeish.

“However, now is the best time to step away. I was fortunate to go out on my own terms and feel very lucky to do that as I know many sports people seldom have the opportunity.”

First named in the Australian Women’s Indoor Squad in 2004 at the age of 16, McLeish made her senior debut in 2008 against England, a game she also scored in.

With over 60 internationals to her name, McLeish has been a constant in Australian Indoor hockey circles for over a decade. She was also a member of Australia’s 2009 Junior Women’s Outdoor World Cup squad.

“I would like to thank those who have supported me on this incredible journey. I have had many coaches along the way and have drawn knowledge and inspiration from them all.

“However, there are a couple individuals who have shaped me as a player. They were honest and always had my best interests at heart. They will continue to be people I will seek advice off, and I am forever grateful.

“Thank you to all the athletes I have played with. Some for a long time and others only short…I feel privileged to have competed with them all. I have developed many lifelong friendships because of it.

“My local hockey club, Albion Park Women's Hockey Club has been a huge contributor. They have supported my decisions and encouraged me during this journey of which I feel very honoured to be part of such a wonderful club.”

“Lastly (and not least) my family. My Husband Shane, kids Zachary and Alice, my parents Jane and Greg Cobbin and my immediate family have all contributed throughout the many years.

“From Mum and Dad driving me long distances to training and championships, to Shane holding down the fort at home so I can compete. I would not have been able to put as much time, effort and money into playing if it were not for the people mentioned above. Getting this far was certainly a team effort.”

Hockey Australia congratulates Emma on a fantastic career.
