Jillaroos Head Coach Stacia Strain has penned an open letter following the announcement of the players selected to compete at the FIH Hockey Junior Women’s World Cup 2023 in Chile.
“The selection panel and I are thrilled to congratulate the exceptional athletes who have been selected to be a part of the final 18-player team to attend the Junior World Cup (JWC). Our team includes five Hockeyroos and three development squad athletes. It is an incredibly talented group who have been selected not just based on their skills but also for their outstanding work ethic, grit, and a commitment to our culture. What we believe are the true hallmarks of Australian hockey.
I would like to also acknowledge and thank all the athletes have played for the Jillaroos over the last 18 months. You have been an essential part of this journey, and helped us bring our vision to life. I am incredibly grateful for your contribution to this program and look forward to witnessing your continued success both on and off the pitch.
My philosophy has always been - yes we want to win gold BUT by cultivating an environment where we create confident, balanced and independent women who then lead and empower those around to do and be the same - we will achieve our goal. I’ve worked hard on building this and it started during our trip to Uluru and Central Australia in August 2022.
I would like to thank Hockey Australia for their unwavering and invaluable support, particularly in making that cultural trip to the Northern Territory a reality. This transformative journey to the heart of Australia was an extraordinary experience for our young athletes, one that wouldn't have been possible without the backing and dedication of Hockey Australia. This support extended beyond the confines of the hockey pitch, demonstrating a deep commitment to the holistic development of our athletes.
The visit to Uluru was the start of our journey towards the JWC. It not only deepened our appreciation for the diverse cultures that make up Australia but also instilled a sense of pride and responsibility in representing our country.
The Junior World Cup is a significant event in the development of young athletes. The coaching staff and I are honoured to be entrusted with the responsibility of preparing them for this challenge. Our coaching philosophy has always been to push boundaries and strive for excellence, and this selection reinforces our commitment to that vision.
Once again, congratulations to the athletes selected. This achievement is a testament to your talent, perseverance, and teamwork. Representing your country on the international stage is a tremendous honour and a recognition of your outstanding skills and potential.
We look forward to representing Australia with distinction in our endeavours to win the tournament for the first time.”
