The medallists for the Open Division of the have been decided. After three days of competition, the Men’s and Women’s Open Division threw up some thrilling finales.
Men’s Open Competition
In the Men’s gold medal match, New South Wales prevailed in a scintillating encounter against the Australian Capital Territory. The Final went to a penalty shootout after scores were locked 7-7 at full time.
Remarkably, Scott Govers looked to have scored the winner for NSW when he converted a penalty corner in the final minute, only for another former Kookaburra, Glenn Turner to equalise and secure his hat-trick with the last touch of the game after a phenomenal last gasp interception by Jake Staines.
NSW managed to hold their nerve to win the shootout 2-1 to be crowned champions and end the tournament undefeated. Click here to watch a full replay of the match.
The bronze medal match between Queensland and Victoria was also closely contested. A first quarter brace from Matthew Agent and a last quarter double from Jared Taylor gave the Queenslanders a 4-2 victory, Taylor’s second goal in the final minute sealing the result after Victorian captain Jake Sherren had netted both of his side’s goals to set up an exciting climax. Women’s Open Competition
New South Wales Blue and Western Australia played out a seven goal thriller in the Women’s gold medal match, with the team in blue securing a 4-3 win.
Amazingly, six of the seven goals came in the final ten minutes after WA captain Lauren Austin opened the scoring with the first of her three goals in the 22nd minute. Kiarra Marsh drew NSW Blue level on the half hour mark before Austin replied with her second a minute later to regain WA’s advantage. But Emma Corcoran and then Litiana Field both struck to put NSW Blue in front, Marsh scoring her second in the final minute to effectively seal the result despite Austin completing her impressive hat-trick in the dying seconds. Men’s U21 Competition
Western Australia have been crowned the 2020 Australian Under 21 Indoor Men’s Champions after edging out New South Wales in a 5-4 thriller. Amazingly, seven of the nine goals came in the second half. The match was scoreless at quarter time and 1-1 at half time, WA’s Harry Golding cancelling out Ehren Hazel’s opener just before the main break.
A Samuel Mudford field goal made it 2-1 to NSW in the 21st minute before Ryan Pace answered straight back for WA from a penalty corner. The teams continued to trade blows from penalty corners, Jared Flanagan giving NSW the lead back before Dylan Forces again tied it up from a PC to set up a grandstand last ten minutes.
Pace’s second goal a minute into the final quarter gave WA the lead for the first time but another goal to Hazel made it 4-4 with a tense seven minutes left on the clock. In one of the games of the festival, it took another exceptional penalty corner from Pace to seal his hat-trick and WA the title.
Due to smoke haze in the area from the bushfires, the bronze medallists were decided by a penalty shootout, which Queensland won 2-1 over Victoria.

The gold medal match saw New South Wales prove too good for New South Wales Blue in a 7-2 result. It only took a minute for the goal fest to start as Helena Tobbe hit the target for NSW before NSW Blue captain Courtney Hogan levelled the scores in the 6th minute. From there though it was all one way traffic, a quick fire Emma O’Brien brace followed by Tobbe’s second goal and Kelsey Hughes’ first had NSW well in control leading into the final quarter. Captain Emma Corcoran made it 6-1 before Comfort Ferguson scored a late consolation for NSW Blue, with Chloe Barrett putting a cherry on top with New South Wales’ seventh with two minutes remaining.
Western Australia rounded off the podium, taking bronze courtesy of a 3-2 victory over the ACT. Goals from Jayde Della and Helen Legge had given the ACT a 2-1 lead after 16 minutes but WA’s Morgan Bentley proved the game breaker, scoring twice in the space of six minutes to seal the result.

Boys U15 Competition
The Final of the Boys U15 tournament was a one sided affair with New South Wales proving their dominance of the male age group by defeating Victoria 5-0. The match was still in the balance at half time with NSW leading 1-0, but they turned the screws in the second half to run away with the game. Jaylen Harrison was the star scoring a hat-trick, while Tyler McCann’s double within the space of three minutes just before three quarter time ensured there would be no chance of any miracle Victorian comeback.
The third place play-off was also heavily lopsided as Queensland Marron accounted for New South Wales Blue 4-0. Two field goals from Riley Profke together with penalty corner conversions from Dylan Quinlan and Daimon Bell made it a comprehensive victory.

The score would remain 2-2 at the end of full time meaning the match would be decided by penalties. In the shootout both teams had one success from their first two shots before both missed their third attempts. After Victoria missed their fifth penalty, Georgina West nailed her attempt to win the shootout 3-2 for Queenslanders.
