Home advantage! Canberra plays host to Oceania Indoor World Cup Qualifier

Published Fri 07 Jun 2024

A Trans-Tasman showdown is set to decide which nation will advance to the 2025 FIH Indoor Hockey World Cup in Croatia in February next year, as the best Indoor Hockey players from Australia and New Zealand prepare to go head-to-head.

From June 24 – 26 at the National Hockey Centre in Canberra, the Trans-Tasman rivals will clash in best-of-three series’. The event will see Hockey ACT host their second major Indoor Hockey tournament of 2024 following January’s successful Hockey Australia Indoor Championship.

Hockey Australia has today announced the men’s and women’s Indoor squads, which will undertake an intensive training camp to decide the final teams that will take on the Kiwis.

The men’s squad, coached by Brett Herrington features six athletes from ACT, including the experienced Jake Staines, who many will recognise from his efforts with the Canberra Chill.

Former Kookaburra Ben Rennie will be one to watch in goals, with Heath Ogilvie and Scott Govers looking to continue to add to their family’s rich Australian Hockey history alongside their current-Kookaburra brothers Flynn and Blake.

The women’s squad, coached by Lauren Austin, includes four ACT athletes, and a wealth of familiar names from the Hockey One League including two of the 2023 season’s best Goal Keepers, Perth’s Lizzie Duguid and Tassie’s Evie Dalton.

Australia will be looking to maintain consistency, having qualified for every Indoor Hockey World Cup since the inaugural edition in 2003.
