Hockey in Australia has grown exponentially, with the latest results from the Australian Sports Commission revealing significant growth in hockey’s Sporting Schools program.
Following an added focus in 2024 to expand hockey’s presence in schools nationwide, over 63 thousand kids across 116 schools participated in hockey activities in 2024, up 53% from over 41 thousand kids in 2023.
Key highlights in 2024 include:
- A 53% increase in participation, engaging 63,597 kids in 2024 (up from 41,449 in 2023).
- A 33% program expansion, reaching an additional 116 schools.
- 158% revenue growth, more than doubling from $252,000 to $574,000.
The success is a testament to the expanded efforts and additional collaboration with Member Associations, sharing the same drive and commitment to increase hockey’s presence in schools across Australia.
The increased investment further strengthens hockey’s participation pathways, adding to the growth seen at the club level and within Hockey Australia’s junior national program Hookin2Hockey for 5 – 12-year-olds, while further supporting clubs and associations and enhancing exposure for the sport.
With additional new resources, including a dedicated new position at Hockey Australia in 2025, hockey is poised for even greater momentum in the coming year.
