Hockeyroos trio shortlisted for FIH Hockey Stars Awards 2021-22

Published Tue 06 Sep 2022

Hockeyroos Head Coach Katrina Powell, goalkeeper Jocelyn Bartram and young gun Amy Lawton have been named as finalists for various categories in the International Hockey Federation (FIH) Hockey Stars Awards.

Powell has been shortlisted for the Women’s Team Coach of the Year, Bartram the Women’s Goalkeeper of the Year, and Lawton the Women’s Rising Star of the Year.

The trio’s inclusion is further recognition of the Hockeyroos’ impressive Women’s World Cup (bronze medal) and Commonwealth Games (silver medal) campaigns earlier this year.

Fans and media can vote in each category which will contribute to the final results.

“Congratulations to Triny, Jocelyn and Amy on this acknowledgement,” said Hockey Australia CEO David Pryles.

“The transformation and progression of the Hockeyroos this year has been amazing. While hockey is a team sport and is played for team success, to have these three individuals make shortlists for awards reiterates the positive trajectory of this team and the outstanding performances they had at the World Cup and Commonwealth Games.”

“Triny has done wonders with the group since taking the reins, Jocelyn was arguably the best goalkeeper at the World Cup, and Amy continues to demonstrate her potential as one of the best young talents in world hockey.”

“I encourage all Australian hockey and sports fans to vote for our three finalists, all of whom are deserving of the respective awards they are in the running for.”

No Kookaburras players were shortlisted, largely due to the world number one ranked team’s lack of international matches in the past 12 months.

Australia did not compete in the latest FIH Pro League season and the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games was the Kookaburras’ only major tournament since the Tokyo Olympics.

The final shortlist was established solely by an Expert Group composed of players, former players, coaches and officials selected by each of their Continental Federations.

A new voting process has been implemented this year. Votes of an Expert Group will count for 40% of the overall result, while votes from National Associations, represented by their respective national teams’ captains and coaches, will count for 20%. The fans and other players (20%) as well as media (20%) make up the remaining 40%.

Voting closes on 30 September with the winners announced in early October 2022.
