Hockey to receive Commonwealth Games Australia ‘Green2Gold2Great’ funding

Australia’s national hockey teams, the Kookaburras and Hockeyroos, have received a welcome funding injection, with hockey named amongst 22 sports to benefit from the Commonwealth Games Australia’s (CGA) Green2Gold2Great initiative.

The funding allocation to hockey will go towards supporting Australian hockey’s women’s and men’s flagship teams on their pathway to gold.

The initial contribution announced by the CGA brings together Foundation and Performance allocations for each sport. Foundation allocations are a per-head commitment to sports based on their forecast team size, with Performance allocations making specific performance initiatives, such as qualification competition and team camps, possible.

The Green2Gold2Great initiative has been designed to support national sports teams in being able to put their best foot forward on the global stage and will enable the delivery of 37 performance initiatives geared toward 2026 success.

“Commonwealth Games Australia has and continues to be a strong supporter of hockey, so we thank them for this investment into our sport and High Performance programs as one of the key pillars of our Strategic Plan,” said HA CEO David Pryles.

“Both the Kookaburras and Hockeyroos share a proud history of success at the Games.

“This funding will be crucial to ensuring Australia’s hockey heroes continue their mission of being the world’s best and giving them the best possible chance to finish on top of the podium at the next Commonwealth Games.”

Green2Gold2Great is an investment in CGA’s aim of being the number one nation in terms of gold medals won, overall medals won, total number of medallists and the number of sports winning medals at the Commonwealth Games. It is made possible by the investments, sponsorship revenues and fundraising activities of CGA, including the marketing rights fee paid for the 2026 Games.

“The Games host may be unknown for now, but what’s guaranteed is our commitment to our athletes and sports as they prepare for 2026,” Craig Phillips AM, CGA Chief Executive Officer, said.

“We want our team to arrive ready to compete, with CGA funding complementing other performance investment to ensure athletes have the tools for success.”
