Hockey Australia adopts ASC’s Modern Coach & Officiating Approach
Published Tue 28 May 2024
Hockey Australia (HA) has bolstered its ongoing commitment to grassroots hockey, with a two-pronged approach designed to retain players, coaches, officials and volunteers, in collaboration with the Australian Sports Commission (ASC).
Further aligning in its long-standing partnership with the ASC, Hockey Australia has subsequently adopted its Modern Coach and Officiating Approach and its Sports Volunteer Coalition Action Plan (SVCAP), to ensure that volunteers and coaches, officials & volunteers in our game are supported and retained.
The number of people playing hockey in Australia remains strong, with playing numbers having bounced back to pre-pandemic levels following the COVID-19 pandemic. However, like many sports in Australia, hockey’s main area of improvement is in retaining volunteers and our workforce.
Hockey Australia is committed to ensuring the ratio of coaches, volunteers and officials to participants remains healthy, to provide the best possible playing experience for the hockey community.
We are embedding the key principles and actions from the SVCAP, which addresses the main barriers volunteers face within Australia and details the steps organisations can take, to provide a better experience and entice more people into volunteering.
Similarly, adopting the ASC’s Modern Approach to Coach and Officiating ensures we can deliver on a vision of the future, tailored to educating coaches & officials through flexible education and clearer pathways while adding development opportunities.
Hockey Australia encourages all member associations, clubs and volunteers, coaches and officials to take advantage of HA’s and the ASC’s resources, flexible education tools and development opportunities.
