Australian Indoor squads for 2022 announced

Following months of planning and talent identification, the 2022 Australian Indoor squads have been announced, comprising 187 athletes from across the country.
The release of the squads brings a new chapter to Australian Indoor Hockey as a nomination process was undertaken to assist in selection due to the lack of national and state level competition being played.
The disruptions to the Australian Indoor Hockey calendar caused by COVID have impacted the last two national events scheduled for January 2021 and 2022.
COVID also forced the cancellation of the FIH Indoor Hockey World Cup Belgium 2022 and prevented any European tours that normally take place each year for Australia’s senior and junior Indoor squads.
Due to the circumstances, the Australian Indoor coaches worked with local coaches and selectors in finalising the squads over the past three months.
“The border restrictions meant the national coaches could not visit every State and Territory but we managed to have a presence at the majority of the Indoor events held on the east coast,” said Hockey Australia Manager of Hockey Operations, Liam Dixon.
“These events included the Queensland Indoor Festival, NSW State Championships, ACT All-Stars Event and the Victorian Club Championships.
“Along with attending these events, we engaged key stakeholders in Tasmania, Western Australia and the Northern Territory to assist in the selection process.”
Australian Indoor Women’s Head Coach Mark Sandhu said he was pleased with the selection process considering the challenges.
“It is great to be able to refresh the squads. The development of these athletes starts now as the focus moves towards the next Indoor Hockey World Cup,” said Sandhu.
“With the support of Hockey Australia and state-based selectors, we have been able to see most of the athletes compete in state level competition.
“I am looking forward to seeing how these athletes respond to the challenges and the opportunity to compete against their fellow squad members in training camps to be scheduled later in the year.”
Australian Indoor Men’s Head Coach Steve Willer said he is excited about the potential in the squad.
“I am looking forward to the next 12 months, working with the selected athletes to continue developing successful elite level Indoor Hockey in Australia,” said Willer.
“It has been a challenging couple of years negotiating our way around COVID. We have selected six talented squads in our endeavour to be at our best when it matters.”
Hockey Australia Indoor Advisory Group Chair, Lyn Hill oversaw the selection process and was pleased with the outcome.
“The announcement of the Australian Senior, Junior and Emerging Indoor squads for both the men and women is a welcome step forward after such a difficult two years,” said Hill.
“Congratulations must go to Mark (Sandhu) and Steve (Willer), Assistant Coaches Liam Dixon and Troy Rossiter and all the other key Indoor stakeholders who have worked together to ensure all of the players who nominated for these squads were given the opportunity to be considered for selection.”
“Further congratulations to the players named in the squads and I wish them all the best as opportunities become available for training camps and future competitions with borders opening up for overseas travel.”
Further details regarding training camps and other organised events will be released in due course.
The time and location of the next FIH Indoor Hockey World Cup is to be confirmed.
