The men’s and women’s players who will attempt to qualify Australia for the 2024 Hockey5s World Cup have been selected following the national camp in Warrnambool.
Australian Hockey 5s Men’s Coach Alistair Park and Women’s Coach Keegan Popowski named their teams for the Oceania World Cup Qualifiers to be played in July.
In the Hockey5s format of the game, teams can have a maximum of four field players plus a goalkeeper with up to four field players and a goalkeeper on the bench.
Having been appointed to their coaching positions a week prior, Park and Popowski were impressed by what they saw during the camp.
“A big thank you to all the athletes that participated in the Hockey5s selection camp,” said Park.
“As the first step on our Hockey5s adventure it was great to see all players willing to try, fail and adapt their approaches to this new and exciting format.
“This willingness to be flexible is going to be critical in determining our success for the upcoming Oceania World Cup qualifiers.”
Similarly, Popowski was grateful for the approach and intensity of the players who attended the camp that officially launched Australia’s Hockey5s campaign towards the World Cup.
"It was fantastic weekend with some great efforts from all the squad members,” said Popowski.
“All of the athletes picked up the new format quickly making selections incredibly tight but I am excited by the team list we have named."
The dates and location of the World Cup Qualifiers will be announced by the Oceania Hockey Federation soon.
The 2024 Hockey5s World Cup is scheduled to be held in Oman with dates to be confirmed.
