Australian 2022 Indoor Hockey Championships cancelled

The 2022 Australian Indoor Championships scheduled for January has become the latest national hockey event cancelled due to COVID.

After collaboration with hockey’s State and Territory Member Associations (governing bodies), Hockey Australia announced it was unviable to hold the Australian Indoor Championships as planned in January 2022.

“It is incredibly disappointing to have to cancel another national hockey event but sadly it is naive to plan for a tournament in the current climate with the ongoing uncertainty and restrictions in place,” said Hockey Australia GM - Commercial, Communication and Events, Tim Cherry.

“The way things stand, there would not be enough states/territories able to hold selection events and prepare, let alone participate, so it is the sensible and correct decision under the circumstances.”

“While understanding the championships are still over three months away, making this decision now gives Member Associations time to adjust plans for their Indoor competitions and provide them the opportunity to host tournaments in January.”

On a positive note, Hockey Australia together with Tourism & Events Queensland (TEQ) and Brisbane Economic Development Agency (BEDA) can announce that the following edition of the Australian Indoor Championships scheduled in January 2023 will be held in Brisbane, Queensland at the Brisbane Sports Entertainment Centre.

Hockey Australia extends its thanks to the Strategic Partners Queensland Government via TEQ and Brisbane City Council via BEDA for their ongoing support to stage this event in Brisbane in 2023.

The Australian Indoor Hockey Championships feature male and female Under 13, 15, 18, 21 and Open divisions.
