Hockey in Australia is built on respect, teamwork and fair play. Officials are the lifeblood of our game—without them, hockey simply wouldn’t happen.

No matter your role in hockey, showing respect for officials is essential. It ensures they feel supported, helps them make the right calls and sets a great example for our young participants– hockey’s future!

Hockey Australia is committed to respectful behaviour at all levels of the game. Our National Integrity Framework and Code of Conduct set clear expectations for how everyone should behave and define what is not acceptable, helping to keep hockey safe, fair and inclusive.

This is also important for creating positive sporting environments, as recognised in the Australian Sports Commission’s Modern Approach to officiating, coaching and enjoying sport as a whole. A key part of this is ensuring all participants, including officials, are aligned in having the resources and environments they all need to thrive.

Officials make important decisions that help keep hockey safe, fair, and fun for everyone. With the speed of the game and the intensity of competition, their job can be challenging.

By signing this pledge, you commit to:

  • Accepting decisions gracefully - even if you disagree
  • Speaking to officials with courtesy and respect
  • Showing good sportsmanship, no matter the match result
  • Treating all officials fairly, no matter their background or experience
  • Discouraging abuse, harrassment or intimidation
  • Reporting poor behaviour towards officials if you see, hear or experience it

Respecting officials means respecting the game. Whether you’re a player, coach, volunteer, or spectator, we all have a part to play in making hockey a welcoming, positive and safe environment.
