Everything you need to know as the Kookaburras and Hockeyroos go for gold at the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games.

The 22nd edition of the Commonwealth Games is being held in Birmingham, England from 28 July – 8 August 2022.

Featuring some of the world’s best hockey nations, the Kookaburras are aiming to win gold for the seventh straight time since hockey was first introduced to the Commonwealth Games in 1998, while the Hockeyroos are attempting to win their fifth Commonwealth Games gold medal.

Venue

The hockey competition will be played at the University of Birmingham Hockey and Squash Centre.

How does the Hockey Tournament work?

The tournament runs from 29 July to 8 August and comprises of 3 phases.

Phase 1 - Pool Stage
Each team plays against the other respective teams in their pool.
The top team from each pool advances to the Semi Finals where they will take on the second placed team from the other pool.
The 5th to 10th ranked teams from each pool progress to the classification matches.

Phase 2 - Semi-finals and classification matches
The winners of the Semi Finals progress to the Gold Medal Match, with the losers to compete in the Bronze Medal Match.
Classification matches include 9th v 10th , 7th v 8th, 5th v 6th.

Phase 3 - Gold and Bronze Medal Matches
The matches to determine the medallists will take place on Sunday 7 August for the women’s competition and Monday 8 August for the men’s competition.
